Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Chicago Bears NFL Betting Preview

Week 5 of the NFL season gets underway with a quarterback rematch from Super Bowl LII with both now on different teams as Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-1) visit Nick Foles and the Chicago Bears (3-1). Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. ET on Thursday at Soldier Field in Chicago and will be televised on FOX and NFL Network.

These former NFC Central rivals have met 59 times in history with the Bears leading the series 39-20. They last met in 2018, as the Bears won at home 48-10 to end a two-game losing streak to Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers have lost two straight at Soldier Field since winning in overtime 27-24 back in 2008.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Betting Preview: Keep Brady Going

After dropping their opener, the Bucs are on a roll with three straight wins, and they are 2-2 ATS this season, missing a cover by 0.5 points on Sunday. The Bucs offense ranks ninth in the NFL in passing yards (273.8 yards per game), 27th in rushing (97.8 yards per game) and ninth in scoring (30.0 points per game). The defense ranks fourth in yards allowed (312.0 yards per game), second against the run (64.3 yards per game) and ninth in scoring defense (23.0 points per game).

Sunday was the welcome to Tampa Bay game for Brady as he led a 17-point comeback with five touchdown passes. Brady went 30-for-46 for 369 yards and found nine different receivers with five different touchdown scorers. On the season, he has completed 65% of his passes for 1,122 yards, 11 touchdowns and four interceptions.

Running back Leonard Fournette (ankle) missed Sunday's game with an injury and is also unlikely to play Thursday. Running back Ronald Jones II picked up the slack rushing 20 times for 111 yards. Jones has 253 yards on the season with one touchdown.

With wide receiver Chris Godwin (hamstring) out, Mike Evans had seven catches for 122 yards and a score, while Scotty Miller had five catches for 83 yards and a touchdown.

Evans has 17 catches for 230 yards and five touchdowns on the season while Miller has 15 catches for 250 yards. In addition to Fournette and Godwin, tight end O.J. Howard (Achilles) is also out for Thursday.

Chicago Bears Betting Preview: Fix the Offense

The Bears couldn't complete the comeback to stay unbeaten Sunday in a loss to the Colts, and they are now 2-2 ATS this season with both covers on the road. The offense ranks 21st in passing (232.8 yards per game), 20th in rushing (110.5 yards per game) and 25th in scoring (21.3 points per game).

Meanwhile, the defense has played well, ranking seventh in scoring defense (20.3 points per game), ninth in passing defense (230.3 yards per game) and eighth in total defense (345.3 yards per game).

In Sunday's loss, Foles was 26-for-42 for 249 yards with a touchdown and an interception in his first start of the season. Foles has played a game and a half, completing 59% of his passes for 437 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions.

The running game was non-existent Sunday as running back David Montgomery ran 10 times for 27 yards and wide receiver Cordarelle Patterson ran three times for five yards. On the season, Montgomery has 218 yards at 4.1 yards per carry but has yet to rush for a touchdown this season. Running back Tarik Cohen is out for the season after getting hurt against the Falcons in Week 3

Wide receiver Allen Robinson had another 100-yard game Sunday, making seven catches for 101 yards with a score. Robinson leads the team in receptions (25) and yards (331), while tight end Jimmy Graham has a team-high three touchdowns. Wide receiver Anthony Miller has two touchdowns on the season with 133 yards.

Hrabosky performed a strange routine throughout his 13 seasons in the big leagues. The “Mad Hungarian,” as he was called, would take a few steps from the mound toward second base, pause for a moment in meditation, and then slam the ball into his glove as he stomped back to the mound.

While the movements looked like the random kookiness of an unhinged man, there was a method to the madness. Hrbosky first developed his ritual in 1974 as a way to get psyched up and focused on the game.

Bill Lee

Career: 1969-1982

Teams: Boston Red Sox, Montreal Expos

If relievers march to the beat of their own drummers, Bill “The Spaceman” Lee was his own marching band. A Beantown legend to this day, Lee spent 1969 to 1978 with the Red Sox before wrapping up his career with the Expos.

Lee delighted fans and baseball writers with colorful quips and outlandish behavior immediately upon arrival in Boston. During his first tour of Fenway Park, he looked at the Green Monster, Fenway’s iconic left field fence, and asked, “Do they leave it there during games?”

Lee feuded with Red Sox skipper Don Zimmer throughout the 1978 season, publicly criticizing Zimmer’s use of the pitching staff and arranging pranks with teammates. The rebellion led to Red Sox management trading away Lee’s best friend Bernie Carbo, and eventually Lee himself.

Turk Wendell

Career:1994-2004

Teams: Chicago Cubs, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Colorado Rockies

A journeyman reliever, Wendell provided solid late-inning insurance for the Cubs, Mets, Phillies, and Rockies during his various MLB stops. Still, he’s more remembered for his in-game antics than his pitching performance.

Wendell was one of the most superstitious players the sport has ever seen. He would chomp on four pieces of licorice before pitching each inning and brush his teeth in the dugout between innings.

Besides making his dentist proud, Wendell had a few peculiar behaviors when taking the field. He often waved to the center fielder, spiked the rosin bag like a football, and would leap over the foul lines like a kangaroo.

Mitch Williams

Career: 1986-1997

How could a flamethrower nicknamed ‘Wild Thing’ with a glorious curly mullet—who began his career in the ‘80s, nonetheless—not make our list?

Williams is here for good reason. It was always a party when Wild Thing took the mound. Sometimes the party was for Williams’s squads. Other times the opposition did the celebrating. Wild Thing was lights out when he was in command of his high-90s fastball. Batters feasted when he lost control.

Just consider Williams and the 1993 Phillies, a squad packed with huge personalities. Wild Thing dominated for much of the season, posting a career-high 43 saves. A quick look at the NFL Power Rankings for Week 4

The NFL season is just starting, but there’s already a lot to talk about and take into consideration when we try to identify the league's best teams after three complete games. There are no big surprises in the official NFL ranking, but there are a few things that are worthy of mentioning and recognizing.

The reigning champions, Kansas City Chiefs, led by an incredible performance by Patrick Mahomes so far, are taking back the top spot this week, after a not so strong start in the first couple of games. The Chiefs had to struggle a little bit more than expected to get started, but what we saw last Monday against Baltimore is just plain championship stuff by Mahomes and the team in general.

Out of this Top 10, we definitely expected to see the Chiefs, Ravens and Seahawks in some of the top spots, and there they are, but it’s also important to mention the great start that the Packers have had, always led by great Aaron Rodgers’ performances, and other than this, it’s refreshing to see teams like the Steelers, Bills, Titans and Rams doing a good job and putting some pressure on the big favorites.

In the case of the New England Patriots and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, we must say that we did expect to see them stealing some of the spotlight, but it was a little bit uncertain to predict how both teams would look after the major changes they suffered during the offseason.

The Pats are just starting to get used to not having Tom Brady in the team after so many years, but Cam Newton is a great replacement, we must say, not only quality wise, but personality wise too, he’s a young, yet experienced player who knows what it is to be on the spotlight and be the face of a team. On the other hand, Tom Brady is also getting used to playing for a different organization, a different division and a different conference, along with a new coach and new teammates. It must not be an easy task for him after so many years leading the Patriots and making NFL history over there, but the team is 2-1 now in the top spot of the NFC South, and maybe it’s time we start paying attention to what the Buccs can do.

Week 4 is coming, and things will certainly shake up a little from now on, it’s great to see so much competitiveness so early in the season, great rivalries, and matchups. We can’t wait to see
how things will start shaping up in the next few weeks of this new NFL season.

2020 NFL Betting Stats Thru Week 4

Undefeated Starts

Through four weeks in the NFL season, there are still six undefeated teams leading their divisions. Here at sportsoddshistory.com, we’re always bringing you the stats and facts you crave. Today we bring you the 2020 NFL betting stats thru Week 4.

Four of them are at 4-0, with the Titans and Steelers at 3-0. Tennessee and Pittsburgh were scheduled to meet in Week 4, but the game was postponed due to COVID-19 cases on the Titans.

Green Bay has been particularly dominant, leading the league in average points scored (38.0) and margin of victory (12.8). The defending Super Bowl champion, Kansas City, has been strong defensively, giving up just 17.5 points a game. Seattle, led by quarterback Russell Wilson, is second in the league in scoring at 35.5 points a game.

In the AFC East, 4-0 Buffalo has sprinted out to a two-game lead over New England. The Patriots are adjusting to life without Tom Brady, and the Bills are the new kid on the block. Tennessee has followed up its AFC title game appearance with a good start, but has only a two-point victory margin.

Winless in the Big Apple

Both New York teams are winless, and their combined points scored is less than nine NFL teams. The Jets, in particular, have been abysmal, losing all four games by an average of 16.5 points. If you want to be a smarter bettor, you need to know that the Jets are also one of four teams who have yet to cover a spread all season.

The Giants are scoring only 11.8 points a game, less than half the league average of 25.7. Their defense is respectable, but they’re still losing by double digits per game. The other two teams without a victory are Atlanta and Houston, which just fired head coach Bill O’Brien.

Spread? What Spread?

The Packers and Seahawks are the only teams that have covered the point spread in all of their games. It’s important to know these 2020 NFL betting stats. For anyone riding with free picks from these guys have been cashing in.

Those stats are not surprising given Green Bay’s margin of victory, but Seattle’s games have been somewhat closer. Still, the Seahawks have found a way to cover in every game.

So far this season, the cumulative over/under betting lines have been 249 points lower than the total points scored. That means, on average, the over/under line is almost four points less than the actual points scored. Teams are combining for an average of 51.3 points a game, a record for this point in the season.

For Week 4, the average was a little more than two points a game under the actual points. It’s still translating into consistent wins for across-the-board over bets. On the season, the over has paid out in 35 games and the under in 23, with five pushes. A bet of $10 on the over in every game would have netted a cool $108.
