2020 College Football Betting Trends

2020 College Football Betting Trends

It’s a college football season like none other, but we still need to look at college football betting trends for 2020. Most teams will finish the season without a game out of conference. The Big Ten was slow to start and will only play eight games.

The Pac-12 just kicked off this past weekend and will only play seven games. And yet we’re still going to cobble together a college football playoff out of these shortened seasons.

The unique circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic has also changed gambling on college football, both weekly wagers and when betting NCAAF futures. With some seasons not kicking off until November, we have less knowledge and fewer data points.

And with no real sense of how good teams may be, many bets are being made from best guesses, or as good as a guess can be.

Editor’s Choice: A Look at the 2020 NCAAF Season So Far

College Football Against the Spread Trends

The atmosphere ranges from no fans, some fans, to 11,000 Notre Dame fans that rushed the field on Saturday. And that change in home-field advantage is reflected in the numbers.

Away teams are covering the spread more than 50% of the time. Away dogs are covering at 53%, the same for all dogs. And this past weekend, the first for the Pac-12 football, away teams covered an eye-popping 62%. Away dogs covered at an even more impressive 72%.

What exactly can we take from this as we look to the remainder of the season? Nothing is a sure thing, so be cautious.

And with COVID possibly putting a starting quarterback on the sidelines, bet later in the week. Clemson’s offense played well at Notre Dame even without Trevor Lawrence. But his absence shifted the line considerably, as well as the betting fortunes of many.

Must Read > 2020 NFL Betting Trends

Conference Irregularities

The SEC has been playing since September, with six weeks in the books. But even there, it is taking some time to adjust to the new norms. Like Arkansas, who is now a perfect 6-0 against the spread and 4-0 against ranked teams.

Or the reality that Mike Leach’s offense at Mississippi State is a major work in progress. The Bulldogs are 1-5 against the spread, falling an average of eight points short. These are some interesting college football betting trends.

In the Big 12, the Texas Longhorns continue to live off reputation. They are 5-2 on the season but just 2-4-1 against the point spread. Meanwhile, West Virginia is flying under the radar, with a 5-2 record ATS. You may have seen these teams in the premium college football picks posted over at Action Sports Picks.

No one knew what adding Notre Dame to the ACC would change. We all just “knew” that Clemson would roll over everyone in its path. Well, the presumed best team in the country just lost and is only 2-6 against the spread. Meanwhile, your best bet in the ACC is Wake Forest, at 5-1 ATS, by an average of 10 points.

Over/Unders

In the NFL, offense has been king, and the smart bet is the over. In college football, however, we haven’t seen that trend. The over is ahead of the under by a handful of games, but that’s driven exclusively by overtime games. When a game ends after 60 minutes, the over and the under are hitting at exactly 50%.

You can see, even though this has been a season like no other, you need to focus on college football betting trends to help you win more bets.

The Ravens suffered a tough divisional loss at home to the Pittsburgh Steelers 28-24 on Sunday. Baltimore blew a 17-7 halftime lead and turned the ball over four times.

To make matters worse, cornerback Marlon Humphrey tested positive for COVID-19 this week, and the Ravens put seven defensive players on the COVID-19 list Tuesday. Linebackers Patrick Queen, L.J. Fort and Matt Judon are among the big names that will have to have negative COVID-19 tests before being eligible to play Sunday.

Quarterback and reigning NFL MVP Lamar Jackson had a rough game against Pittsburgh with two interceptions and two lost fumbles. He threw for 208 yards on 13-of-28 passing and ran for 65 yards on 16 carries. Brown leads the team with 27 catches for 379 yards, while Andrews has a team-high five touchdowns.

Baltimore Ravens at Indianapolis Colts Betting Line

Head to our favorite pay per head bookie site at realbookies.com, where the Ravens are favored by 2.5 points on the road, down from an opening line of four points. The total is 45.5, and the Colts are a +120 home underdog.

Betting Analysis

With so many defensive players questionable or out, the high-powered Ravens defense will be short-handed. The line has already shifted in the Colts favor and could move even more before kickoff.

The Colts have covered every home game so far this season, and the way their defense creates turnovers, they will be pressuring Jackson all game.

A Bookie Conversation

There have been hundreds of books written on gambling, the “art form”, “how to beat the odds”, etc.… ‘How to be a sports bookie’ is a rarely talked about subject. We have a theory; {gamblers hold a belief that says}, “to be a sports bookie, one must have money, lots of money”. If you have been around the sportsbook industry for any length of time, then you know this to be false. You do not need tons of money to get started in this business, you don’t need money if you are a longtime bookie and have been doing this for years. What you need is a budget and a plan that works. If you desire to earn a great income as a sports bookie, there are some rules to live by and a few tips that will help you down the stretch.

· GET ONLINE: You must have an online presence in today’s competitive world. Remember this; you are not competing with other bookies. We are not telling you to start an ad campaign and market the living daylights out of your sportsbook. NO. What we are saying when we tell you to have an online presence is this… You are fighting for your clients – your existing clients and getting more customers. You must get them back, and you want to keep them.

· EVERYONE HAS EXCUSES: “It’s too expensive” “I’m not a programmer”, “I have no site-building experience”, “I know little about lines and odds” on and on, and on the excuses go. LISTEN: DON’T LISTEN, to the negative. So many people have a negative concept of how to be successful in the bookie business. Do not let yourself be taken down by hostility. Negativity breeds contempt, run from negative people. You can do this, and you can do it quickly, affordably, and with little knowledge of sports betting, lines, and odds, or even sports.

· HOW – How can you do what we say you can do? PAY PER HEAD. This is the only way you can do what we say you can do. The PPH industry opened its doors around 25-years ago, they were great but unaffordable. As a result, everyone forgot about them. In recent times (the past 10-years) the PPH industry has experienced a renaissance. They have come on strong with new concepts that every bookie wants and great price points.

· The per head bookie providers figured this thing out and the first thing that had to go was high prices. The high cost is a thing of the past. The best PPH providers are now offering their services for around $7-$13 per head, per week. For this price, your client can bet as much as they wish in the sportsbook, the casino, and racebook. There is no limit to how much they bet, when they bet, or what they bet on.

· The best per head providers are now offering bookies a package deal that includes a state of the art sportsbook, a Las Vegas-style casino, and a world-class racebook. The entire gaming site is custom-built for you by the PPH for FREE. They will have your site operational in a day or two and your clients can be gambling on your site in the same amount of time.

Over 150 million pounds in bet money was made in the Cheltenham Festival by a punter alone. With a considerable amount of money being made, this only proves that horse racing is one of the most popular betting sports in history.

Tennis

Some might not agree, but tennis is one of the popular betting sports in the whole world. One of the key reasons why tennis is a popular betting game is that every year, tennis has four grand slam events that you can bid on. Tennis generates a revenue of more than a billion pounds every year.

Tennis is in the limelight as a betting sport due to the headlines of four major events that will take place every year. One example was when Manny Pacquiao was pitted against a relatively unknown fighter. In one betting scenario, a bettor could bet on the round that the Pacman would knock out the other fighter. Of course, there are also bets wherein underdogs can win and in these cases, the payouts are extremely profitable.

Takeaway

Sports are fun to watch especially if you have a team or a participant you’re favoring. To make it even more enjoyable, you can bet on sports. The sports mentioned above, are some of the most popular sports people bet on. Combine it with the fast pace and unpredictability of these sporting events, it’s a sure thing that someone is quietly waiting on the outcome of a bet.

Remembering the greatest World Series pitching performances

Baseball fans have had a rough year in 2020. Like all sport, baseball has been shook to its foundations by the emergence of the coronavirus pandemic. There were fears that a 2020 MLB campaign would be shelved due to the outbreak, before a controversial shortened season was announced as a compromise.

Ultimately however, baseball did return, to the relief of millions of fans across the States and worldwide. After a hectic season, the World Series finally concludes later this month with the Dodgers favorites to win the championship against the Rays, according to most of the popular picks and parlays.

To get us in the mood for the World Series finals, we’ve taken a look back at some of the greatest pitching performances to have graced championship games.

Sandy Koufax – Los Angeles Dodgers vs Minnesota Twins – 1965

Rightly heralded as amongst the greatest pitchers of all time, Sandy Koufax’s achievements in baseball are still the stuff of legend, especially when one considers he retired at the young age of 30 due to career blighting arthritis.

Perhaps the best example of Koufax’s pitching prestige came in the 1965 World Series against the Minnesota Twins. With the game tied at 2-2, Koufax pitched a complete game shutout in Game 5 to give the Dodgers a 3-2 lead before game 6, which the Twins won. Pitching through his arthritic pain, Koufax threw a three-hit shutout to ensure victory for the Dodgers.

Grover Cleveland Alexander – St. Louis Cardinals vs New York Yankees- 1926

Another memorable performance from a Hall of Fame pitcher came courtesy of Grover Cleveland Alexander in the 1926 series. What was perhaps most impressive is that he was reportedly nursing a hangover for game seven of the series. After pitching complete game victories in games 2 and 6, Old Pete hit the booze and was still shaking off the effects during game 7. It didn’t seem to inhabit his powers too much however, as St Louis clinched the championship.

Jack Morris – Minnesota Twins vs Atlanta Braves – 1991

Morris’s feats in the 1991 World Series saw him named as MVP for the series, and joined Sandy Koufax as the only players to win the Babe Ruth Award for the best performance in the post season.

His performance in game 7, pitching a 10 inning, 1-0 shutout victory over Atlanta saw the World Series go back to Minnesota.

Bob Gibson – St. Louis Cardinals vs Boston Red Sox – 1967

World Series hero Bob Gibson passed away earlier this month, which gives us the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to him by featuring his greatest performances.

Gibson featured in multiple World Series, and was awarded MVP in 1964 and 1967, and the latter was perhaps his best performance over a Series. Gibson won games 1, 4 and 7, including a shutout victory in game 4, and added a homerun in the last game to cap off a perfect World Series.

The baseball world is a darker place with the loss of this incredible athlete.

Is gambling ready for VR?

Whether the gamers like it or not; their consoles and PC’s now face stiff competition from the emerging giant that is Virtual Reality. The totally immersive gaming systems are set to revolutionise the way we play video games but are they also set to affect other parts of the gaming spectrum; gambling for example?

Virtual Reality has been rumoured as arriving any time soon for years now but we are finally at a stage where the technology is accessible and affordable along with the software and bandwidth requirements being met at last – VR is here and looks set to stay no matter your view on the situation.

However, is the gambling side of gaming ready to embrace the totally immersive stylings of VR or is it a bit too soon to be rushing the players from desktop/mobile apps to a digitally recreate games found on online casinos, complete with tables, slots and various other games?

There’s no doubt at all that the market for VR gambling is already present and waiting patiently for their chance to stroll around Casinosonline-canada casino but it’s a huge step forwards for a large portion of the online gambling community.

The more you think about what is possible via Virtual Reality; the less you believe that the initial gambling releases will satisfy the customers as much as the refined websites, applications and traditional land based casinos as it will be a long time before VR can truly flex its muscles and deliver on its potential.

Although bingo sites such as digital online casino sites are usually very safe environments to game in, experts are suggesting that the VR gambling recreations should focus on the social side of gaming at first before introducing the money driven side of the industry as players will need to acclimatise to their new ‘surroundings’ before they can responsibly gamble their own money.

The dream is obviously to have a fully rendered version of a casino that the players can navigate via their headsets from table to table or slot machine to slot machine but this is a long way off as even the application stores themselves will hinder the progress of VR gambling.

Oculus Store, iTunes and Google Play will continue to bar gambling sites from their product inventory. They may have relaxed in terms of the bookmakers and online casinos but VR has been introduced for gaming; not gambling, in the eyes of the store owners.

In truth, the gambling community isn’t ready for VR and a lot of work will be needed to bring the digital casino to the masses. Not just the software and technological side of the matter; but also the acceptance of gambling as a facet of the gaming industry – we have the technology but do we have the willingness? Not yet.

Mobile Gaming Trends To Expect

Without question, the mobile gaming market is growing in leaps and bounds and is rapidly taking over the gaming arena from other platforms.

Recent statistics also back this claim as tablets have generated more than twofold the income from gaming than it did for the past three years. This will push the net worth of the social gaming sector to an astounding $17.4 billion by the end of 2020. If the numbers continue to grow at this rate, the mobile gaming platform will consistently surpass its console counterparts!

With games like real money pokies expected to flourish in the future, the question arises that what patterns and pathways will this rising market follow and what we may behold in the recent future for the mobile gaming market.

Publishers going Mobile

Activision acquired the ‘Candy Crush’ developing studio, ‘King’ a few years back in a deal worth a humongous $5.9 billion. Since this deal, more and more traditional publishers have strewn towards mobile gaming and have brought mobile games to the forefront of their franchises’ thoughts. Pioneering publishers like Bethesda, which released titles like Fallout Shelter, are also reaching for the mobile gaming community. This trend is likely to endure up until the end of 2021 and further.

Android Games flourish

Google has announced that it is spreading its wings in China and this may well mean the reintroduction of the play store in China after an unsuccessful earlier stint. This will allow the Android gaming community to experience an even wider horizon of games and apps from far reaching distances on the globe. The spectral variety of apps will be a treat for everyone and will help narrow the gap between the Apple and Google stores.

Console sales stall

Mobile gaming lags behind console and desktop gaming as of now, but with the unprecedented growth of the mobile market, no one can bet against it overtaking the scenes. Developers’ continued interest and tech advancements towards mobile gaming and online platforms like online casino Canada, the console game sales may drop by up to 40% in 2016 according to Gartner. The diversity of the mobile market and flexibility in pricing favors the mobile gaming arena and is the major underlying cause of such a trend.

PC Gaming Declines

PC gaming has experienced problems on the digital side due to the drop in browser and social games, and the shift in users over to mobile. PC browser revenues have seen a decrease since 2015 because of the transition of casual gaming to mobile devices.

Will the Bills or Cardinals defy the Super Bowl odds?

The race to win the Super Bowl in the 2020 NFL season is taking shape. The Kansas City Chiefs are looking like a solid option to make another run for the Vince Lombardi Trophy after their success earlier this year, although there are other strong contenders.

The Baltimore Ravens have looked promising once again in the early stages of the campaign, while the Pittsburgh Steelers are enjoying a brilliant start to their term. In the NFC Conference, the Seattle Seahawks, with Russell Wilson playing at an MVP-level, are on course for a run. The Green Bay Packers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are challengers as a result of the performances of Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady, respectively.

It would be no surprise to see any of those teams lift the Lombardi Trophy come the end of the season. However, the NFL does like to throw up surprises now and then – with teams making charges towards the end of the year to win it all. We’ll now look at some underdogs that could defy the odds to win the Super Bowl.

Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals have bared their teeth as contenders for the Super Bowl by ending the Seahawks’ unbeaten start to the campaign. Kliff Kingsbury’s men held their nerve in a tense battle with their NFC West rivals, defeating them in overtime courtesy of a field goal from Zane Gonzalez.

Kyler Murray proved that he is more than capable of going score-for-score with the best quarterbacks in the league, matching the exploits of Wilson on the field. The 23-year-old has taken the next step in his progression, although there will be slight concerns over the number of interceptions thrown this term. However, Murray is an electric player and certainly has the potential to guide the Cardinals to a Super Bowl.

Whether it happens this season remains to be seen. Murray is working with a lot of talent in his receiving corps, beginning with DeAndre Hopkins. The Cardinals made a significant trade move for the wideout in the off-season to secure his services from the Houston Texans. Hopkins has matched expectations with an outstanding start to his tenure. He along with Christian Kirk and ageless Larry Fitzgerald are proven playmakers, which could make all the difference down the stretch. Arizona’s offense makes them a very intriguing proposition.

Their defense could be the limiting factor that halts their charge. The season-ending injury suffered by Chandler Jones robbed the Cardinals of their best pass-rusher. However, there are still quality defenders on the roster, including Haason Reddick who is enjoying a career-year at outside linebacker. Patrick Peterson and Budda Baker are playing at an All-Pro level, while Byron Murphy is another player on the rise. There are the building blocks of a unit that could stun the NFL, but they have to go out and prove it consistently.

Buffalo Bills

The Bills have not reached the Super Bowl since the last of their four-straight defeats in the title game at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys in 1993. Buffalo was outstanding under Marv Levy to reach the Super Bowl in four successive seasons but was never able to get over the hump.

Sean McDermott has given the franchise hope of being able to turn around their fortunes, although they need to end their drought without a playoff win that stretches back to 1995. Quarterback Josh Allen was derided after a difficult rookie season, but he has come to the fore after a solid second year. He has developed his game in his third season and is an outsider in the MVP race, throwing 16 touchdowns to only four interceptions after seven games.

The Bills have good value in the NFL Super Bowl betting markets with the leading sportsbooks, who are offering sign-up offers and bonuses for customers putting wagers on the NFL. Buffalo are in the middle of the pack in terms of their odds at the moment due to recent losses to the Tennessee Titans and the Kansas City Chiefs. However, those Super Bowl odds could change in value if Allen and McDermott conjure a run of results to take the AFC East crown for the first time in 25 years before turning their attention to the top sides of the NFL. With Allen and his playmakers – the Bills have the potential for a championship run.

Playmakers such as Stefon Diggs, John Brown, and Cole Beasley are producing every week and have the talent to make an impact down the stretch. The defense is solid enough, but an improvement will be needed against the elite teams to realize a dream of winning the Lombardi Trophy. Buffalo was down the pecking order in the teams predicted to win the Super Bowl at the start of a term for a reason.

We’ll certainly be keeping an eye on these two underdogs for the rest of the campaign. The seemingly impossible might just happen in the 2020 season.
