Chelsea have reportedly set their sights on a deal for the talented Mexican midfielder Edson Alvarez.
According to The Times, there's a possibility that the Blues might reignite their interest in the 25-year-old attacker.
The West Londoners are facing a race against time to finalise their squad for the upcoming Premier League season. With several players leaving and many new faces desired, the club has its work cut out for them. However, the Premier League giants are leaving no stone unturned to strengthen their midfield options.
One of their top targets is Moises Caicedo, but it seems like a deal for the Ecuadorian has hit a roadblock after Brighton rejected their latest offer. So, Chelsea are exploring other avenues, and one of them leads to Ajax's Edson Alvarez.
Chelsea had their eyes on Alvarez last summer, but the deal fell through as the Dutch outfit couldn't find a suitable replacement in time. Now, the Mexican is reportedly open to leaving the club after a somewhat disappointing season.
Chelsea are not the only club interested in Alvarez. West Ham United are also in the mix, making it an exciting race for the player's signature. Nevertheless, with Chelsea's desire to strengthen their midfield, they will undoubtedly be giving it their all to make the deal happen.
However, securing Alvarez and Caicedo won't come cheap. The combined fees for both players could exceed a whopping £120-130 million. But as we know, Chelsea are no stranger to making big-money moves, and if it improves their squad, they'll likely go for it.
