The Detroit Lions have won four league championships in their franchise history, but all those triumphs came pre-AFL-NFL merger, so they have yet to prevail in the Super Bowl. If successful this year, they will be the 21stdifferent franchise to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
After going 15-2 in the regular season, with their only defeats coming against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (week two) and the Buffalo Bills (week 15), confidence is high within the Lions camp ahead of their playoff campaign.
Number One Seeds In NFC
Victory against the Minnesota Vikings in week 18 of the regular season secured Detroit the number one seed in the NFC. With home advantage in the Division Round and the NFC Championship game, should they make it through, they are now the +250 favorites in the Super Bowl betting.
The Lions have never contested a Super Bowl before, but if they land the NFC Championship, where they have NFL odds of -110 to do so, they will book their place at the Superdome in New Orleans on February 9.
In each of the last two seasons, the number one seed from the NFC has reached the Super Bowl. The Lions may be set for a thrilling encounter with the defending champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, if they bag their ticket for Super Bowl LIX.
Goff-Stafford Trade
The big turning point in the Lions’ change in fortunes came in 2021 when they were involved in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams. They swapped quarterbacks, with Matthew Stafford heading to LA and Jared Goff coming to Detroit. Along with the former first-overall NFL Draft pick, the Lions picked up multiple draft picks.
Goff has excelled since arriving in Detroit, scoring 43 passing touchdowns, recording over 17,000 passing yards, and his accuracy with the ball has also improved. Under head coach Dan Campbell, he is showing why he was once considered one of the most exciting quarterbacks in the sport.
The trade with the Rams has helped the Lions pick up some exceptional players from the draft, particularly on defense. Ifeatu Melifonwu, Brodric Martin, and Josh Paschal have all excelled since arriving in the NFL.
Stats Suggest Detroit Is the Best Team In the NFL
Although stats during the regular season don’t always convert into Super Bowl success, the numbers read well from the Lions ahead of the playoffs. With 564 points, they scored far more than any other team in the 2024/25 campaign.
Detroit was ranked seventh on points conceded during the regular season, a huge improvement over the last four seasons. They were on course to be ranked much higher, but they were involved in high-scoring shoot-outs with the Bills (42-48) in week 15 and the San Francisco 49ers (40-34) in week 17, which pushed them down the standings.
Four players from the Lions were named in the All-Pro team for the season, the most from any team. They also have at least two players in contention for the NFL MVP Award ahead of the NFL Honors.
Should Detroit go on to finish the job, it would be a huge moment for the city, as it would secure its first major sports championship since the Detroit Tigers won the World Series in 1984.
