1977 (NBA): Julius Erving plays in his first NBA All-Star Game and is voted MVP after scoring 30 points and collecting 12 rebounds despite his East team losing to the West 125-124. The West failed to cover as 6½-point favorites as they were led by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who came off the bench to score 21 points.
1999 (Boxing): Oscar De La Hoya improves to 30-0 and retains the WBC welterweight title after defeating Ghanaian fighter Ike Quartey by a 12-round split decision. De La Hoya was a -360 favorite for the fight and was +140 to win by decision. Both fighters knocked each other down in an action packed 6th round and Quartey also went down in the 12th round.
