1961 (Boxing): After being knocked down twice in the first round, Floyd Patterson KO's Sweden's Ingemar Johansson in the 6th round to retain the heavyweight title. Patterson was a -350 favorite to win the fight.
1983 (College Basketball): As an 8½ point underdog, NC State upsets #2 ranked Virginia 81-78 in the ACC conference tournament final. In their semifinal game, NC State was a 5½ point underdog in a 91-84 OT win over #5 ranked North Carolina.
1998 (College Basketball): In the first round of the NCAA men's basketball tournament, Bryce Drew's 3-pointer at the buzzer gives #13 seed Valparaiso a 70-69 victory over #4 seed Ole Miss. Valparaiso was a 12-point underdog and the game stayed under the total of 142 points. The Crusaders would go on to lose 74-68 to #8 seed Rhode Island in the Sweet Sixteen.
1999 (Boxing): In a heavyweight unificaiton bout held at Madison Square Garden in New York City, WBA and IBF title holder Evander Holyfield fights to a 12-round draw with WBC title holder Lennox Lewis. Holyfield was a slight -150 favorite for the fight. Many observers felt Lewis had clearly won the fight as the British fighter landed more than double the punches of Holyfield. The two would fight again 8 months later with Lewis winning by unanimous decision.
