1979 (MLB): 40 year-old outfielder Lou Brock becomes the 14th big leaguer to collect 3,000 career hits when his line drive nails Dennis Lamp's pitching hand in the St Louis Cardinals 3-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs. The Cardinals were -150 home favorites as Brock retired at the end of the season and ended his career with 3,023 hits.
1995 (Golf): Australian Steve Elkington fires a 7-under 64 and then defeats Colin Montgomerie on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff with a 20-foot birdie putt to win the PGA Championship at Riviera CC in Los Angeles, California. Elkington, who entered the tournament at 25-1 to win the tournament, was 6 strokes back of leader Ernie Els entering the final round.
2017 (Golf): At Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina - 24 year-old Justin Thomas wins his first major at the PGA Championship by two strokes over Francesco Molinari, Louis Oosthuizen, and Patrick Reed. Thomas entered the tournament at 35-1 to win the title.
