1978 (Boxing): As a 10-1 underdog, Leon Spinks defeats 36-year old Muhammad Ali in a 15-round split decision to become the undisputed heavyweight champion. Spinks, who was the 1976 Olympic Gold medalist, was fighting in only his 8th professional fight. He became the only man take a title from Ali in the ring as Ali's other losses were non-title contests or bouts where Ali was the challenger.
1994 (College Basketball): Kentucky matches an NCAA men's basketball record by coming back from a 31-point 2nd half deficit to defeat LSU 99-95. The Wildcats failed to cover as a 7½-point underdog as they hit 12-of-23 3-pointers in the 2nd half. Walter McCarty hit a 3-pointer with 19 seconds to give Kentucky a 96-95 lead - their first lead since 1-0. The Tigers missed 11 free throws (13-of-24) in the final 12 minutes of the game.
1998 (NASCAR): Dale Earnhardt Sr. wins the Daytona 500 for the first and only time in his career. Earnhardt, who led for 107 of the 200 laps, entered the race at +450 to take the checkered flag. It was Earnhardt's 20th attempt at winning the famed race.
