1961 (Golf): At Royal Birkdale in Southport, England, Arnold Palmer wins the first of two straight Open Championships after defeating Welshman Dai Rees by one stroke. Palmer, who shot an even par 72 in the final round, entered the tournament as the favorite to win the title at +250.


1978 (Golf): At St Andrews in Scotland, Jack Nicklaus shoots a final round 3-under 69 to win his 3rd and final Open Championship by one stroke over Raymond Floyd, Tom Kite, Ben Crenshaw and Simon Owen. Nicklaus entered the tournament at +600 as the co-favorite to win the tournament with defending champ Tom Watson, who was tied for the lead going into the final round but shot a 76 (+4). This was Nicklaus' 15th of 18 major championship victories and marked the completion of his 3rd career grand slam.


2018 (Soccer): France wins its 2nd World Cup title after defeating Croatia 4-2. France was a -190 favorite for the match and entered the tournament at +700 to win the title.
