1964 (Boxing): As a +700 underdog, 22-year old Cassius Clay defeats Sonny Liston to become heavyweight champion of the world. Liston did not answer the 7th round bell, stating afterwards he quit due to an injured shoulder.


1977 (NBA): "Pistol" Pete Maravich scores a career-high 68 points for the New Orleans Jazz in their 124-107 victory over the New York Knicks. The Jazz covered as a 2-point home favorite. Maravich connected on 26-of-43 shots and also had 6 assists, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks in 43 minutes of play. The 29-year old finished the season averaging 31.1 points per game to lead the league in scoring.


1989 (Boxing): Mike Tyson improves to 36-0 after defeating British boxer Frank Bruno by TKO 2:55 into the 5th round. Tyson was a heavy -950 favorite for the fight and -700 to win by knockout.
