1969 (NBA): Bill Russell plays the final game of his legendary career winning the NBA Championship for the 11th time as the Boston Celtics defeat the Los Angeles Lakers, 108-106, in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. The Celtics were 3-point road underdogs and +120 to win the series before Game 1. Jerry West scored 42 points in a losing effort and is awarded the NBA Finals MVP in its first year of existence. He remains as the only player on the losing team to win the award.
1973 (Horse Racing): As the 3/2 betting favorite, Secretariat wins the 99th Kentucky Derby in 1:59 ⅖ by 2 ½-lengths, beating the Derbey record held by Northern Dancer (1964) by ⅗ of a second. The record still holds to this day as Monarchos in 2001 (also on May 5th, with 11-1 odds) is the only other horse since then to break the 2-minute mark.
2003 (NHL): As +370 series underdogs, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim defeat the Dallas Stars 4-3 in Game 6 to win their Western Conference Semifinal series. Anaheim was a +130 home underdog for the game as Sandis Ozolinsh scored the winning goal 18:54 into the third period.
2007 (Boxing): As a -185 favorite, Floyd Mayweather Jr defeats Oscar De La Hoya in a 12-round split decision. De La Hoya fell to 38-5 and lost the WBC light middleweight title to Maywather, who improved to 38-0.
