1982 (College Basketball): In the ACC Championship game played in Greensboro, NC - top-ranked North Carolina defeats #3 Virginia 47-45. The Tar Heels were a 1-point underdog. Freshman guard Michael Jordan scored 8 consecutive points in the 2nd half that put the Tar Heels in the lead for good. With a 4-point lead with 8 minutes left in the game, the Tar Heels played a 4-corner offense and held on to the ball (the shot clock wasn't implemented in college basketball until 1985) as they only scored a total of 13 points in the 2nd half. North Carolina would go on to defeat Georgetown in the National Championship as they finished the season on a 16-game winning streak.
1987 (Boxing): In a WBA/WBC heavyweight unification bout- Mike Tyson defeats James "Bonecrusher" Smith by a 12-round unanimous decision. Tyson was a heavy -800 favorite as he went the distance for only the third time in his career (first time going 12 rounds). It was Tyson's first title defense as the 20-year old improved to 29-0.
2017 (NBA): Russell Westbrook scores a career-high 58 points but it's not enough as Oklahoma City Thunder fall to the Portland Trail Blazers 126-121. The Trail Blazers were a 6½-point road underdog and the game went over the total of 222½-points. Westbrook was 21-for-39 from the floor and had 9 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals. The Trail Blazers went with a more balanced attack as they had 7 players score in double figures and were led by Allen Crabbe's 23 points from off the bench.
