1998 (MLB): In the St Louis Cardinals 6-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs, Cardinals first baseman Mark McGwire hits his 62nd home run of the season to break the single-season record set by Roger Maris in 1961. The Cardinals were a -120 home favorite as McGwire would go on to finish the season with 70 home runs.

2002 (Tennis): In what turns out to be the final professional match of his career, Pete Sampras wins his 14th and final Grand Slam championship at the U.S. Open after defeating fellow American Andre Agassi 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. Sampras was a slight underdog at +115 for the match and entered the tournament at +1500 to win the title.

2012 (College Football): Tough day for Colorado football programs as both Colorado and Colorado State lose to FCS members. As a 1½-point favorite, defending FCS champion North Dakota State defeated Colorado State 22-7. The real upset came in Boulder where 21 point underdog Sacramento State beat Colorado 30-28 after Edgar Castandeda connected on a 30 yard field goal as time expired to give the Hornets the victory.
